2. Patented adjustable pitch drive wheel
The adjustable pitch drive wheel compensates the elongation of the plastic chain.
The weak point of a plastic collector chain is the stretch, particularly as the burden increases. The stretch of the plastic can be decreased by using chain links made from fibreglass. However, it is not recommended to use fibreglass for the bearing surface, since it wears the chain’s bearing surfaces and the chain wears faster. The links of all types of chain elongate over the time being in use.
As a result of the stretch the chain and the drive wheel do not match anymore, causing the chain only be drawn by a few teeth or pins. In such a situation, the chain jumps from the drive wheel, causing severe problems (flights may drop to the bottom of the tank, the process has to be interrupted and renovated). For this reason, in all other systems the drive chain has to be kept continually tight, particularly in large tanks.

Finnchain has compensated the elongation of the chain by a simple and ingenious adjustable pitch drive wheel. By adjusting the pulling pins, the stretched and worn chain link will be able to match the drive wheel sprockets by increasing the diameter of the pitch circle.

3. Chain Watch
When the chain stretches or wears, the chain’s division no longer corresponds to the drive wheel’s sprockets and the load is distributed onto two or one link at a time. In such a situation, the chain easily skips over the drive wheel, and for this reason the chain is to be kept tight all the time.
The Finnchain system’s Chain Watch removes this problem, as the Chain Watch prevents the chain from skipping mechanically. An electric switch can also be connected to the Chain Watch, turning the motor off in overload situations.

4. The world's strongest scraper flights
The profile structure and the high fiber concentration (60–70 %) guarantee the Finnchain flights stiffness and straightness operating even in the largest tanks.
A range of 5 different flight profiles provides the right solution for every tank size and sludge amount.

5. The correct attachment of the scraper flights
Practice has shown that the chain links to which the flights are attached and also the neighbouring links tend to have greater wear than the links elsewhere in the chain.
The higher the flight profile is, the more it vibrates and the faster the chain wears. This is more significant in wide basins, with a demand for higher scraper flight profiles to move large load of sludge. Finnchainís patented scraper flight attachment method removes this vibration.

It has been noted that the idler wheels with teeth wear the chain even more than the drive wheel. Only Finnchain’s structure allows the use of toothless, smooth idle wheels.
7. Upper and bottom rails
Bottom rail FC-R122
In Finnchain’s bottom rail, the main attention lays on the ease of service. Once installed, changing is easy. Possible heat expansion, during the service time, is also taken into account within the structure.
The bottom railís material is suitably chosen to provide easy move of the flights as well as a long service life of both, rails and sliding parts. The rails are shaped to prevent derailment.

In the Finnchain system, either fibreglass structured rails are used, on which are installed the FC-122 rail or stainless steel structured Z rails.

Stainless steel drive shafts, with self-aligning bearings. The ball bearings ease installation and elongates the bearing’s service life.

Parts - Sludgescrapers for Circular tank
1. Drive machinery
A motor located at the edge of the tank rotates a gear, from which drive shaft transmits the rotation to the drive wheel.
The motor’s power and speed on the tank’s edge is in the table beneath (values in the directive):
Tank’s diameter (m)
10 15 20 30 40 |
Motor Power (kW)
0,18 0,18 0,25 0,37 0,37 |

2. Patented adjustable pitch drive wheel
Stainless steel drive wheel rotating the collector chain.
The drive wheel is a patented adjustable pitch pulling-pin drive wheel, which elongates the service life of the chain and the wheel and increases reliability.
The only wearing part of the pulling-pin wheel is the plastic pin. The drive wheel has not to be detached from the shaft in order to change sleeves or adjust the wheel pins.
3. Chain Watch
The patented chain watch ensures the flights undisturbed operation by mechanically preventing the chain from skipping off the drive wheel.
Watch Chain Watch’s operation-animation
In overloading situations, the chain watch stops the motor.
4. Idler wheels – no teeth, smooth wheels
The chain moves over the polyacetal idler wheel, attached to the wall.
The idler wheels are installed about every 4 meters. Smooth idler wheels – no wearing teeth.
5. Patented Conic Pin chain
A tow bar is attached to the Conic Pin chain, moving the bottom scraper and surface skimmer.
The patented pin’s conic structure decreases the stress directed towards the chain and elongates the chain’s service life.
6. Bottom Scraper
Each tank has at least 2 bottom scrapers, manufactured from fibre profile. If there is a lot of sludge or the tank has a large diameter, it is easy to install more bottom scrapers.

7. Surface Scum Skimmer
The fibreglass profile surface scraper is attached to the bottom scraper through a stainless steel pipe structure. The scum collector at the end of the scum skimmer transfers the scum into the sludge channel at the edge of the tank.

4. Scraper flights – variety of choice
Finnchain provides a range of 6 different flights:
- High profile flights for tanks with a large fluctuation in the water surface
- Special strengthened flights for wide tanks
- Steel flights for narrow tanks
For surface scum skimmer, all flights are equipped with easily replaceable rubber blades.
